The study programme INTEGRATED HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE has been developed to address the need for interdisciplinary experts qualified to provide holistic care of an individual, bearing in mind the person's actual mental, physical, social and spiritual needs and abilities. The master's study programme Integrated Health and Social Care follows the trends in developed countries towards integrating health and social care, which are greatly intertwined especially in persons in need of long-term care – and their number is growing rapidly. Today, 4% of the population in Slovenia and the rest of the developed world depends on the assistance of others with their activities of daily living. Projections show that this share will more than double in the future. In the EU between 70 and 90 percent of such individuals are receiving care from informal or family caregivers; in Slovenia this share amounts to 75%, while institutional care makes up the remaining 25%.
The study programme enables students to become qualified for practising integrated health and social care of ill, disabled and frail persons in need of long-term, continuous and holistic care. Modern nursing care centres on the patient as a whole and supports the patient's self-sufficiency and self-responsibility.
The master's study programme Integrated Health and Social Care enables students to deepen their knowledge in wider social areas; trains them to search for new sources of knowledge in the academic and scientific field; to apply scientific research methods to a wide range of problems and under new or altered circumstances in the integrated and continuous medical care of patients, and in the interprofessional collaboration in community care for the health, quality of life and well-being of patients. Basic, applied or research and development projects are a compulsory part of the programme.
