Project description:
HEAL is a project aimed at creating a more inclusive HED system that supports the needs of all students, including those who may have experienced trauma. Trauma can have a significant impact on student's academic performance, mental health, and well-being, and it is crucial that higher education professionals are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to provide TTC. Trauma can affect a student's ability to focus, recall information, and complete academic tasks, leading to a decline in academic performance. Mental health issues such as depression and anxiety can also arise from trauma, affecting a student's ability to cope with stress and engage in positive behaviors. Furthermore, trauma can create a sense of unsafety on campus, leading to difficulty participating in extracurricular activities. Marginalized and underrepresented students are particularly vulnerable to trauma and may face additional barriers to accessing support services, exacerbating existing inequities in HED.
According to a study published by the Journal of Interpersonal Violence, approximately 60% of college students have experienced at least one traumatic event in their lifetime. Furthermore, trauma can have a lasting impact on individuals, and it has been linked to a range of negative outcomes, including depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicide. Despite the prevalence and impact of trauma among college students, many higher education professionals may not have the necessary training and resources to effectively support students who have experienced trauma. This can create significant barriers to academic success and contribute to a less inclusive higher education system. The European Commission's policy on higher education, known as the Bologna Process, recognizes the importance of promoting student centered learning and creating inclusive higher education systems. The Bologna Process emphasizes the need for HED institutions to take into account the diverse backgrounds and needs of their student populations and to provide appropriate support services. HEAL aligns with the Bologna Process's objectives by providing a comprehensive training program and guidelines for TTC that can be integrated into existing support services to create a more holistic approach to student care.
Additionally, by establishing a network of HED institutions committed to trauma-informed practices, HEAL can facilitate ongoing collaboration and sharing of best practices across diverse institutional and cultural contexts. By promoting a more inclusive and supportive learning environment, HEAL has the potential to contribute to improved academic performance, mental health, and well-being among college students.
Objectives:
Develop a comprehensive training program and guidelines for trauma-informed teaching and communication (TTC) to assist higher education (HED) professionals in providing programs that meet the needs of students who have experienced trauma.
