Project description:
In Slovenia, the demand for products and knowledge about the cultivation and processing of herbs is increasing, and at the same time the number of herb growers and cultivation areas is also increasing. The number of domestic and foreign suppliers of various herbal products and services related to herbalism is also increasing. We do not have quality data on the cultivation of herbs in Slovenia. The partnership consists of three institutions with extensive knowledge and competence in the field of cultivation and consumption of herbs: the leading Slovenian Institute of Hop Research and Brewing, the UNM Faculty of Health Sciences and the UP Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies.
Main objectives of the project:
The most important results/findings will be:
Since the existing studies did not address the needs in the field of herbalism by involving different actors or stakeholders and analyzing comprehensively with different methodologies, we seek to fill this research gap. The project also provides a basis for legislators to accept - based on the research results - systemic solutions in this field, thus forming new strategies and enabling the possibility of employment for a large proportion of people.
Phases of the project:
The program of the target research project is divided into 7 work packages (WP), which are carried out coherently and in mutual cooperation of all participants. The project leader ensures the cooperative collaboration of all participants.
DS1: ANALYSIS OF THE STATE OF HERBS CULTIVATION IN SLOVENIA
Objective: To determine the status of herb cultivation in Slovenia
DS2: ESTABLISHING A METHODOLOGY FOR CALCULATING YIELD FOR DIFFERENT TYPES AND PARTS OF HERBS AND CONVERTING DIFFERENT YIELDS TO A COMMON DENOMINATOR
Objective: Establishing a methodology for calculating the average yield for different species and parts of herbs (leaves, flowers, whole plant, seeds, roots) and to find a way to bring different yields to a common denominator
DS3: IDENTIFYING THE NEEDS OF CONSUMERS AND PRODUCERS AND SELECTING APPROPRIATE HERBS
Objectives: Identify consumer and grower needs, grower networking and herb purchasing opportunities, select the most environmentally and market friendly herbs for cultivation in Slovenia.
DS4: COST ANALYSIS OF CULTIVATION OF SELECTED HERBS
Objective: Cost analysis for the cultivation of herbs that have the greatest potential for production and sale in our country.
DS5: EVALUATION OF THE IMPACT OF CULTIVATION OF SELECTED HERBS ON THE ENVIRONMENT
Objective: Evaluation of the impact of the cultivation of selected herbal plants on the environment.
DS6: EVALUATION OF THE CULTIVATION POTENTIAL OF SELECTED HERBS IN SLOVENIA
Objective: Comprehensive assessment of the potential of herb cultivation in Slovenia.
DS7: UPDATE GUIDELINES FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF LOCAL HERBAL SUPPLY
Objective: Update and elaborate new guidelines for the development of local supply of herbs, focusing on short- and long-term measures that would increase the production of herbs in Slovenia.
